FAQ
(serious-ish)
NOTE: There is no minting for Dumb CryptoPunks.
All punks are distributed by hand (starting Mar. 2022).
Are these real CryptoPunks?
No. Dumb CryptoPunks are not affiliated with Larva Labs or CryptoPunks. We (Satire Labs) are simply using their name for marketing purposes.
How is that legal?
Short answer – parody law.
Can you elaborate?
Of course. By adding the word ‘dumb’, we are technically “making fun” of CryptoPunks, which allows us to use their trademarks under a law known as ‘fair use’. Fair use is a doctrine that permits use of copyrighted material in a parodical work without permission from the rights holder. It’s the same law that allows Weird Al Yankovic to use the music from Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” in his parody song “Eat It”.
That said, OpenSea is pretty much in-bed with Larva Labs. If they do take it down, you can see them on NFTrade (link).
So is this a real NFT?
Yes. They are ERC-721 NFTs on Polygon (layer 2 Ethereum). You can see the contract here (link).
Although we (Satire Labs) makes fully functional web3 stuff, for legal reasons Dumb CryptoPunks needs to be categorized as a work of parody art. So, in the eyes of the law, our NFT collection is actually an art gallery and “Dumb CryptoPunks” you’re buying is considered the art. But that’s for lawyers to worry about. All you need to do is enjoy our sweet punks!
Why is this free? What's the catch?
There is no catch. NFTs are just JPEGs that are likely worthless.
We’re giving them away for free because:
- This has been long-promised, after we were forced to discontinue Dumb SolPunks (link) for safety reasons.
- Free is the easiest way to get rid of something.
- I’m tired of shilling and feeling beholdened to “investors” (people who paid and mint my NFTs).
Most of all, I just think this is a hilarious thing conceptually, with a potential of creating value. I have 2 Nigerian friends (who I found via Apenomics) who’s helping, going forward. So if the content (@DumbCryptoPunks on IG and Twitter) doesn’t sound like me, that’s why.
Are you saying CryptoPunks is dumb?
Yes.
But we’re also dumb… unironically dumb. We accidentally made a blank CryptoPunk #10,000 (link). Rather than re-making, we’ll just leave any mistakes as part of our history.
Okay, I understand now.
Great. Anything else?
I guess not.
Okay thanks. See you later!
BTW – this Legal FAQ was re-purposed from Dumb Starbucks FAQ (wiki).
No, this is mostly a joke.

Not at all. In fact, we love CryptoPunks and look up to them as role models. Unfortunately, the only way to use their intellectual property under fair use is if we are making fun of them. So the “dumb” comes out of necessity, not enmity.
Great. Anything else?
